About the event

July 5, 1779. A peaceful summer sunrise over the Long Island Sound is shattered by the sight of 1,500 British troops hitting the sand. The war hasn’t just arrived in New Haven. It’s in the backyards, the farmsteads, and the streets.

Join us for an immersive journey tracing the literal path of the British invasion on New Haven. We move from the neighborhood of the landing beaches to the charred remains of local defiance, ending where nineteen neighbors stood their ground against a global empire that finished their invasion on the city on the horizon.

The Route

  • The Landing (Lighthouse Point Park neighborhood): Stand near the first British boats scraped the sand and the alarm was raised.

  • The Cost (Pardee-Morris House): See the grounds of an 18th-century home put to the torch. Hear the story of the family that lost everything in a single afternoon.

  • The Seawall: following the route that patriots ran…
