They stand like bookends on the New Haven skyline—two massive basalt traps holding centuries of secrets. Join us for a "Summit-to-Summit" journey that explores the two very different spirits of the Elm City.
We will begin at East Rock, where we look up at the soaring Soldiers and Sailors Monument and discuss the cost of freedom and the city's civic pride. Then, we cross the city to West Rock, where the story takes a dark turn back into the middle of the 17th century where we'll crawl into the shadows of Three Judges Cave to follow the trail of the King-Killers who fled across the ocean to find refuge in these very rocks.
The Route
The Beacon (East Rock Park): Stand at the foot of the 112-foot granite monument. We’ll discuss why this spot was chosen as the city’s "North Star" and trace the names of the volunteers who never came home.
